2016 Social Finance Award Judges

Thank you to all our 2016 Social Finance Awards judges for their tremendous support and contribution. The judging panel reviewed the nominees for the awards and determined the winners. The panel was representative of the diverse of stakeholders in social finance in Canada and comprised of cross-sector leaders in impact investing.

This year’s judges were:


Bindu Dhaliwal, Associate General Counsel & Director Environmental Social & Governance, BMO Financial Group

Bindu Dhaliwal is Associate General Counsel & Director, Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) for BMO. Bindu is responsible for: BMO’s sustainability performance disclosure; identifying and evaluating emerging ESG issues; and, engagement activities with the investor and NGO community on sustainability matters. Bindu is also the co-chair for the Legal & Compliance Diversity Council. Bindu is a frequent speaker on sustainability trends in the financial services sector, social finance and diversity in the legal profession.


Andrea March, Manager of Research & Partnership, Social Impact, RBC

Armed with a passion for the environment and a strong understanding of corporate practices, Andrea has built her career around mobilizing the private sector for positive community impact.
Andrea has contributed to both the Corporate Sustainability group as well as the newly formed Social Impact team since joining RBC in 2014. Andrea currently manages the RBC Social Finance initiative, which aims to increase awareness of how private capital and financial markets can affect social and environmental change.


Assaf Weisz, Co-founder and Managing Director, Purpose Capital

Assad Weisz is co-founder and Managing Director of Purpose Capital, a North American impact investment and advisory firm that supports leading financial institutions, foundations and families to integrate impact considerations across their portfolios. Assaf acts as the key contact and spokesperson for Purpose Capital and is responsible for leading the strategic direction of the company as well as oversight on firm-wide activities. Within Purpose Capital, Assaf also serves as the Executive Director for Nexus Canada, part of a global movement to bridge communities of wealth with social entrepreneurship.


Valen Boyd, Account Manager, BDC

Valen is an Account Manager at BDC. She works with Social Entrepreneurs and Technology Entrepreneurs with a focus on the Toronto Market.


Todd Jaques, Director, Strategic Initiatives, Tides Canada

Todd Jaques collaborates with projects and partners to build uncommon solutions for the common good, including growing and cultivating the Tides Canada project community, building impact investing partnerships, and innovating the shared platform model. Prior to joining Tides Canada, Todd was the Director of Operations and Agriculture Partnerships at the Ontario Association of Food Banks, where he was responsible for creating new programs to increase food banks’ participation in sustainable food systems. A resident of Hamilton, Todd volunteers his time with the Hamilton Community Land Trust.


Adam Spence, Founder and Director, Social Venture Connexion (SVX)

Adam Spence is the Founder of the SVX and Associate Director, Venture & Capital Programs at the MaRS Centre for Impact Investing. For over ten years, Adam has focused his work on driving social, economic, and environmental justice through community development, education, social innovation, and public policy change as an advocate, researcher, and social entrepreneur. At MaRS, Adam helped found the MaRS Centre for Impact Investing and the School for Social Entrepreneurs – Ontario.


Laura Hryhorsky, Director of Development, JUMP Math

Laura Hryhorsky is the Director of Development at JUMP Math. Laura is grounded in the principals of philanthropy with over ten years of progressive fundraising experience. Laura Specializes in the cultivation of long lasting, mutually beneficial stakeholder relationships. At JUMP Math, Laura works to achieve the company’s funding goal as a social enterprise in Canada, the United States and globally. Laura strategically cultivates relationships with corporate donors, foundations, high-net-worth individuals, government bodies, and impact investors.
